Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is quoted as once saying It's interesting to think of this in terms of illnesses or sicknesses you may struggle with on a day to day basis. Although you may be battling your ailment every second of every day, it is important to remember always that you are not your sickness, and your sickness is not who you are. Small steps can be taken to separate yourself from your condition. For example, instead of referring to yourself as a "cancer patient", say simply that you are "fighting cancer". Do you see how you take the power from your disease and give it back to yourself, just by rephrasing such a simple term? Another thing I often hear people do is refer to the disease they are stuggling with as "theirs". They take ownership, they posess their sickness when they things such as "My fibromyalgia". If it is a part of you, how are you supposed to get rid of it? Again, simply by rephrasing your words to "The fibromyalgia," is a small but great way to take back some of the control and seperate yourself and who you are from your illness. Although it's always easier said than done, with some practice and discipline, you can slowly begin to think and speak of yourself as a healthy person, fighting an illness, rather than an ill person fighting to get healthy. Remember "What we think, we become." |
